In Africa; The Return for Deposit Schemes Work Quite Successfully for the Bottlers; However the Cullet Collection and Return is Nascent. Total Glass Waste is Normally Disposed in Landfills; And Recycling is Operated by Small; Scattered and Largely Informal Players. Ifc and its Client; A Glass Packaging Manufacturer in East Africa; Have been in Discussion of Possible Advisory Services to Support the Client’S Decarbonization Initiatives; With a Focus on Strengthening the Value Chain for Supplying Post-Consumer Glass Cullet for the Production Facility in Tanzania; Particularly in the Post-Consumer Glass Segment (the Services). To Source Cullet; The Client has been Working with its Distribution Partners to Collect Rejects; Degraded and Broken Containers. To Increase the Share of Cullet in its Raw Material Mix; The Client could Further Look at Various Business Models; Including Those Where Post-Consumer Waste Glass and Cullet Act as a Primary or Sole Waste Stream; As Well as Options to Procure Cullet from a Comprehensive Material Recovery Facility. The Client could Offer Cullet Offtake Agreements And; Realizing the Sector Challenges; Could Consider Participating in the Sector Development Activities and Potentially Contribute to Comprehensive Waste Recovery Projects that would Include Cullet Recovery Operations (Either of or a Combination of Cleaning; Sorting; Screening and Crushing). The Client Intends to Better Understand the Prevailing Regulatory Framework and Investigate Opportunities for its Improvement to Make the Business Models More Viable.
