Five micro-watersheds in the two woredas will be targeted with the envisioned CES mechanism directly benefiting Koga scheme users and farming households as ecosystem service providers. The first phase of the project runs from 1 November 2022 to 31 October 2023 and is funded by the European Union’s RESET plus Innovation Fund and a HELVETAS contribution. Helvetas is responsible for overall coordination and steering the implementation of the project, accounting, and reporting to the donor. The specific objectives of the project are: o Objective 1: To develop, based on cross-sectoral collaboration and negotiation, a system for compensation for ecosystem services (CES) and to formulate an enabling operational and institutional framework for applying CES for enhanced watershed (landscape) management in the Koga Watershed. o Objective 2: Implement environmental rehabilitation and climate change adaptation activities for resilience building and enhanced livelihood improvement in selected pilot micro-watersheds. The project rests on three main components/outcomes: ü Outcome 1: CES mechanism created. ü Outcome 2: Pilot CES implemented. ü Outcome 3: Scaling and communication. and four key intervention strategies: • Selection of 5 micro-watersheds in sub or major watersheds where soil loss is critical; • Development and testing of tools and guidelines for compensation and/or payment for ecosystem services in collaboration (CES/PES) with communities and relevant government agencies; • Implementation, based on co-funding, of a package of sustainable land and water management measures and the verification of these on sediment yield in streams and rivers; • Documentation and endorsement of the tools, guidelines and approaches for replication in the Tana Subbasin and possibly beyond..
