Editing involves the improvement of the formatting, style and accuracy of a text, including grammar and punctuation to ensure that the original documents (usually in English) are error free. Localization refers to the process of adapting products (documents and videos) in accordance to linguistic, cultural, technical, and other locale-specific requirements of the target market. Localization involves taking a product and making it linguistically and culturally appropriate to the target locale (country/region and language) where it will be used. Typically, localization entails translating the text and ensuring idiomatic and conceptual equivalence of the translated text; modifying graphics, data fields, tables, forms, layout, colors and tables, etc. to be congruent to the local culture. The purpose of this project is to edit (in original language, usually English) and localize online courses as well as related training material which are continuously created by the UNCTAD Trade Facilitation. UNCTAD Trade Facilitation Section wishes to improve the editorial quality of the online courses developed usually in English as well as to continue externalizing the localization of the online courses into French, Portuguese, and Spanish. Although there are no immediate plans to localize or partially localize (i.e. by adding subtitles to an English online course) in other languages, localization may potentially be requested in other languages such as Arabic and Russian. Therefore, these languages are also considered target languages and are part of the project. Other languages could be considered in the future as well. Languages: • Source language: English • Editing language: English • Target language: French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Portuguese. • Target language for subtitling: Russian and Arabic.
