Turbocharger replacement work at the MAV plant

Tender Summary

The Interdepartmental Syndicate for the Sanitation of the Paris Metropolitan Area (SIAAP) in France from Europe region has released this tender for In 2023, the turbo-compressors at the Marne Aval plant consumed 3.8 GWh/year, representing 20% of the sites total energy expenditure for process air supply. These units have been in operation since the plant began operations in 2009. Since the implementation of simultaneous nit/denit aeration on May 30, 2022, only one of the four turbo-compressors is now required to supply the NDN filter array with air. Given the positive results achieved in terms of energy efficiency and process performance, reverting to the previous aeration method is no longer feasible. However, the turbo-compressors are not designed to withstand such continuous operation. Consequently, the airflow rate has been set to a minimum of 12,000 Nm³/h for the entire filter array, which corresponds to 850 Nm³/h per filter. The system therefore does not allow for adjustment of the airflow proportionally to the incoming nitrogen load. Despite the airflow being maintained at its minimum threshold, residual N-NH4 concentrations remain well below the regulatory limit of 4.0 mgN-NH4/L, mostly below 1.0 mgN-NH4/L at the factory outlet. We can thus confirm that the NDN battery is over-aerated. The projected optimization of the batterys operation allows us to estimate an energy saving of 1.8 GWh per year. This increased efficiency translates into a reduction in operating costs of approximately €225,000. Furthermore, equipment obsolescence is causing additional technical downtime affecting both the battery and the biological treatment process. Thus, for the year 2025, the turbocharger unavailability percentages were as follows: The project consists of replacing the current turbochargers with state-of-the-art magnetic bearing technology. The turbocharger replacement work aims to: - ensure the long-term viability of the industrial equipment with more robust components; - significantly reduce maintenance requirements; - decrease the sites energy consumption to enhance its sustainability and overall profitability with tender notice no. 709647-2026 published on 14 Oct 2026.
