Tender Summary
The Munich Airport GmbH in Germany from Europe region has released this tender for As part of the T/EINS program, Terminal 1 at Munich Airport is being modernized in stages to ensure safe and efficient operations until at least 2050. Since the existing baggage handling system will only be partially available during the renovation work, additional baggage infrastructure is required to maintain baggage operations. For this purpose, a new baggage sorting hall (GSH-113) is being built at apron position 113. The hall complements the existing baggage logistics of Terminal 1 and is directly connected to the existing baggage handling system. It will handle key baggage processing functions such as sorting, security checks, manual processing, customs inspections, and the reintegration of baggage into the ongoing conveyor system. Building Concept: The baggage sorting hall will be a single-story operational building with an additional steel mezzanine level for conveyor technology and technical equipment. The building features a functional building envelope with a sandwich facade and a flat roof. The total gross floor area, including technical and ancillary areas and the grating level, is approximately 6,000 m². The building height is approximately 9 meters and can reach up to 12 meters locally due to technical installations. Operation and capacity: The facility is designed for a sorting capacity of up to 2,500 pieces of luggage per hour and provides the necessary capacity to ensure baggage operations during the comprehensive renovation of Terminal 1. In addition to sorting and inspection areas, spaces are provided for operations, personnel, storage, and technical equipment. Project organization and tendering: The overall project will be divided into several tendering units. The plan is to commission a general contractor for the planning and construction of the baggage sorting hall, including the grating levels; a general contractor for the supply and installation of the baggage handling system; and a separate contractor for connecting the hall to the existing structure (bridge structure). This will ensure the efficient implementation of the respective trades and targeted management of the interfaces between the building and the baggage handling system. Location and framework conditions: The baggage sorting hall will be built on an open apron area in the security-critical area of Munich Airport. The construction site contains existing infrastructure, including aviation fuel lines, drainage systems, and power and IT lines. It is also in close proximity to the existing buildings of Terminal 1 and Hall C-West. The project has technical and operational interfaces with the existing buildings, the supply and disposal systems, and the comprehensive renovation of Terminal 1. In addition, a charging point for apron equipment is planned southeast of the baggage sorting hall.Synergies in electrical supply will be examined during the planning phase. Energy supply and sustainability: The hall will be constructed as a fully-fledged operational building with its own independent technical infrastructure. Legal requirements for energy efficiency will be met. Use is planned at least until the completion of the Terminal 1 renovation (minimum 12 years); extended usage periods will be reviewed as the project progresses. Special conditions: The new building is located in the safety-critical apron area of Munich Airport while flight operations continue. Planning and execution must consider the requirements of airport operations, aviation security, and the maintenance of adjacent operational processes. Construction and logistics processes are subject to special security, access, and permitting requirements. Existing utility lines within the construction area must be taken into account during construction and integrated into the operational concepts accordingly. The following project-relevant milestones are specified for the planning and implementation of the project: - Execution of planning services for phases 3 to 5: expected Q2/2027 to Q4/2027 - Start of construction: expected Q1/2028 - Completion of construction, including full commissioning of the building services: no later than Q2/2029.
