The tender was published by Deutsche Gesellschaft f r Internationale Zusammenarbeit GIZ GmbH on 14 Nov 2025 for 81317910-Sustainable use of native biodiversity and finances in Ecuador Description of the project Ecuador is one of the 17 megadiverse countries with so-called biodiversity hotspots in the Amazon region and on the coast In addition to 50 national protected areas there are numerous local protected areas However the biodiversity of these areas is threatened by raw material extraction agricultural overuse and climate change Traditional knowledge of indigenous communities especially women about resilient diversified cultivation systems offers high potential for biodiversity-preserving value creation However producers are inadequately organized processing technologies are outdated and market connections are weak which leads among other things to high poverty e g up to 71 in the implementation area of Morona-Santiago province and out-migration of young adults The Ecuadorian government sees the bioeconomy as a key to the sustainable use of biodiversity which is reflected among other things in the national development plan and the biodiversity strategy 2015-2030 Various ministries are currently developing strategies for the bioeconomy regulation and promotion of SMEs as well as gender and biodiversity plans At the same time however there is a lack of reliable data on usable quantities geographical distribution and effects of use on species Due to a lack of regulatory requirements there is a risk of overexploitation of individual species and the replacement of traditional cultivation systems with monocultures In addition indigenous and local communities risk being excluded from the bioeconomy The aim of the Biovalor II project is to improve the regulatory and operational framework for the sustainable use of native biodiversity products by indigenous and local communities in protected areas and their buffer zones in the Amazon and coastal regions The following results among others are sought 1 Adoption of 7 national and subnational policy instruments 2 7 municipalities carry out biodiversity-based impact monitoring of their use 3 1 700 producers 70 women 25 young adults earn additional income through supply contracts 4 18 public administrative units outside the intervention areas apply sustainability instruments Target groups are rural communities in Napo Orellana Pastaza and Morona-Santiago as well as coastal provinces of Esmeraldas and Manab The focus is on families in and around protected areas Sumaco Napo-Galeras Kutucu Shaimi Socio Bosque Important indigenous groups are Kichwa and Shuar whose agroforestry systems are led by women Chakras Kichwa Aja Shuar Organizations such as witoka wi ak kallari and tsatsayaku are specifically supported In addition to local products such as macambo morete and tagua nuts priority is given to developing value chains with market potential and a contribution to biodiversity protection Public and private companies committed to responsible supply chains are also involved The project builds on experiences from Biovalor I and focuses on selected value chains vanilla tagua nut macambo morete Diversified production systems are intended to increase resilience to market price and climate fluctuations By strengthening value creation in the country improving market positioning and introducing technical innovations income should be increased and biodiversity protection promoted Building on a multi-level approach producer organizations are professionalized public institutions are strengthened in planning consulting and financing and expertise in sustainable use financing processing and marketing is developed Women young adults and the introduction of digital innovations are particularly encouraged.
