Tender Summary
The DB InfraGO AG – Track Division (Bukr 16) in Germany from Europe region has released this tender for The Digital Interlocking System (DSTW) project for the Mainz Maintenance District (IHB) Series-02 is a series project of the second tranche of Digital Rail Germany (DSD) and renews the complete signaling and safety technology in the Mainz Maintenance District, with the exception of existing electronic interlocking systems (ESTW). The project is not included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan (BVWP) or the network concept for financing purposes, but is considered an existing network measure in the Ha (High Utilization) and Ha+ (Very High Utilization) networks. The measure involves the renewal of underground cabling, telecommunications systems, and parts of the electrical power supply systems. Preliminary planning was successfully completed in May 2022. Project objectives are to improve system availability by replacing obsolete interlocking technology, to stabilize the operational schedule by implementing track reversal operation, and to optimize operations management from the newly constructed Mainz Operations Center (BSO). The construction of the new DSTW (according to Annex 1) is expected to improve service quality, but not increase traffic volume. As part of the project, the existing relay interlocking systems in Mainz Central Station, Budenheim, Mainz-Bischofsheim, Mainz-Gustavsburg, Mainz-Weisenau, and Nauheim (near Groß-Gerau) will be replaced by the new dual-mode interlocking system (DSTW) to be built. This will eliminate, in particular, the outdated remote control of the interlocking systems in Budenheim and Mainz-Weisenau. The average age of the interlocking systems is currently around 55 years. The total number of interlocking units built in the final state is currently 1,429. To implement the operational control strategy (BSS), the new standard buildings for the operations site (BSO) and the technical site (TSO) are being built for the first time in a pilot project at the Mainz site. The DSTW IHB Mainz Series-02 project will be the only pilot project for a TSO nationwide, serving as a blueprint for a later rollout to other TSO sites. The previous pre-series projects (including DSTW Warnemünde and DSTW Mertingen-Meitingen) only included project-specific building solutions that are not applicable to the series rollout. Experience with DSTW technology from the already implemented pre-series projects is being incorporated into the planning specifications for DSTW Mainz. with tender notice no. 674360-2026 published on 07 Oct 2026.
