The tender was published by Federal Highway and Transport Institute on 12 Nov 2025 for Fe 02 0492 2025 irb - psychoacoustic noise assessment expansion of assessment procedures and development of innovative noise reduction strategies in road traffic FE 02 0492 2025 IRB Psychoacoustic noise assessment expansion of assessment procedures and development of innovative noise reduction strategies in road traffic Traffic noise is one of the three biggest environmental threats to health after air pollution and climate-induced influences Protection against noise is and remains an important task in road traffic and at the same time is associated with ever greater challenges In the area of federal highways too with the measures available it is becoming increasingly more demanding to comply with the applicable limit and trigger values which highlights the need for new noise reduction strategies and innovative approaches to noise protection To date the assessment of road traffic noise has mainly been based on averaged level variables such as the energy-equivalent continuous sound level Such level variables are a good measure of objective noise pollution but do not adequately reflect the actual subjective noise pollution The subjective perception of sound events is significantly influenced by other acoustic and non-acoustic factors The research field of psychoacoustics deals with precisely these relationships between physical sound characteristics and subjective perception and offers a promising approach to complement existing evaluation metrics The aim of this research project is to expand the assessment of road traffic noise to include psychoacoustic parameters The aim is to work out how psychoacoustic parameters can be specifically integrated into noise assessment or the quantification of noise reduction measures in order to map the perceptual effects This is intended to better capture the variance in the perceived annoyance of road traffic noise and enable a more differentiated quantification of noise reduction measures - especially in the subthreshold level range which has so far only been inadequately described using conventional evaluation variables Specifically the psychoacoustic model from the previous project Testing psychoacoustic parameters for innovative noise reduction strategies Oehme et al 2025 is to be validated and if necessary further developed The aim is to define robust and practical variables as a measure for psychoacoustic evaluation criteria and to test them in realistic application scenarios.
