The Ulrich von Dürrmenz School in Mühlacker comprises a heterogeneous building complex that combines two architecturally distinct eras: the historic original building dating from around 1885 and an extension, including an connecting structure, from 1968. Both parts of the building are structurally, energetically, and technically outdated. The building services (MEP) and electrical systems are obsolete and fragmented due to piecemeal renovations over the past decades. Furthermore, the existing buildings present significant barriers. The rigid spatial structures do not meet the requirements of modern, inclusive teaching, nor the logistical processes of a contemporary school and all-day program. The existing outdoor facilities of the Ulrich von Dürrmenz School currently offer only limited usability and recreational value. The schoolyard is predominantly a large, continuous, and paved area with little design differentiation. Age-appropriate play, exercise, and recreation areas for the various user groups are only available to a limited extent. The outdoor facilities are essentially limited to individual benches along the perimeter and the existing covered walkways near the building entrances. Furthermore, there are structural deficiencies in the outdoor areas. In particular, the exterior staircase on the north side is compromised in terms of safety due to ground subsidence and can no longer be used without restrictions. To improve comfort, several covered shelters with integrated seating should be provided to offer protection from sun and rain.
