The State Office for Environmental Protection in Germany from Europe region had released this tender for Recording and assessing the threat to noble crayfish from invasive cancers in the harz district 1 goal of performance The aim of the service is to record the noble crayfish Astacus astacus and the invasive cancer types chamber crayfish Orconectes limosus marbled crayfish Procambarus fallax and signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus taking into account and examining old evidence as well as assessing the conservation status of the noble crayfish For this purpose current examinations and surveys of cancer species as well as the habitat and impairment parameters required for the assessment must be carried out in the preselected waters using a standardized method 2 Scope of services 2 1 General methodology study area and time frame The examination area for recording the types of cancer includes the waters or water sections listed in Appendix 1 2 Table 1 Figure 1 in Appendix 1 1 shows the situation in the country If possible no deviation should be made from the defined study areas The contractor must determine suitable study locations on site in the named study areas A specific examination site with 10 cancer baskets must be set up for each examination area Table 1 see section 2 2 1 The methodological specifications of the TROSCHEL 2006 evaluation scheme Appendix 1 3 apply to the establishment of sampling sites for the noble crayfish the collection of population habitat and impairment parameters for the noble crayfish and the evaluation The information required in this scheme must be recorded in the field in the form of an FFH field report Appendix 1 4 see also the requirements from Section 2 2 2 2 2 Recording work including preparatory work 2 2 1 Selection of the specific examination area The service description is predominantly functional The contractor independently obtains the official permits required for the recording as well as the consent of the respective water body owners and documents this to the client In the study areas the contractor must determine specific study locations or test routes which should be based on previous evidence and the habitat structures whereby FFH area boundaries do not necessarily have to be taken into account A test section or area for examining the noble crayfish should be between 100 m and 500 m long depending on what is possible in the area Cancer detection is carried out at the selected sampling sites using baited crab baskets Liver pork or beef or commercially available boilies fishing accessories should be used as bait The baited crab pots are primarily placed in areas of the water with calm currents such as deep pools For additional stabilization the baskets are protected from drifting with lines It is important to ensure that the crab cage entrances are under water and in contact with the ground so that the crabs can reach the inside of the traps unhindered Ten numbered crayfish baskets 1-10 should be used per study site test section which will be checked approximately every two days over a period of approximately 1 week and re-baited at the same time a total of three inspections per basket in the water water section It is urgently necessary to disinfect the cancer baskets before changing the sample sites in order to prevent possible pathogens cancer plague commercially available disinfectant spray that is not effective against fungi or similar The times spent on data collection must be documented in order to be able to assess the methodological comparability of studies Depending on weather conditions the surveys should be carried out in the months most suitable for crayfish i e between the beginning of May and the end of October All recording work must be completed in 2026 Further information can be found in the service description Appendix 02 with tender notice no. 43.162-2025-01 published on 31 Oct 2025.
