As part of the corridor upgrade, approximately 81 km of track, 102 switches, and nearly 76 km of overhead contact line will be renewed in four construction phases between Remagen and Mainz. The project also includes the construction of three new passing loops and the modification and replacement of approximately 13 switch heating systems. Furthermore, the project encompasses extensive renovation work on the Bank, Bett, and Kammereck tunnels, the expansion and refurbishment of 25 stations, and the construction of five new bridges, various culverts, and retaining structures. The signaling and safety technology will be modernized in two construction phases. In 2028, electronic interlocking (ESTW) and dual-mode interlocking (DSTW) technology will be installed and commissioned at the Koblenz junction and on the Gau-Algesheim to Budenheim section. In the existing signaling and safety areas, necessary block densification will be implemented, and GWB signals will be retrofitted as required. The switch from outdated technology to modern electronic interlocking (ESTW) and digital interlocking (DSTW) technology, optimized block signaling, additional track switching, higher switch speeds, and improved bypass options are intended to sustainably improve operational quality on the line.
