E-Wastes Include Computers, Laptops, Printers, Fax Machines, Household Appliances Such as Refrigerators, Washing Machines, Microwaves, Televisions, and Radios, among Others, Which are Intended to be Discarded. E-Wastes are a Waste Stream with a Unique Combination of Characteristics and Broadly Consist of Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals, Plastics, Glass, Printed Circuit Boards and Other Items. They Contain Valuable Materials that can be Recovered and Recycled. However, the Presence of Elements like Lead, Mercury, Arsenic, Cadmium, Selenium, and Hexavalent Chromium Classifies Them as Hazardous Wastes. Overall, it is Estimated that around 12,000 Tons of E-Wastes are Generated in Mauritius Annually and this Amount is Expected to Grow over the Coming Years. In Recognition of the Negative Environmental and Health Risks Associated with the Haphazard Disposal of E-Wastes and Their Growing Amounts, an Environmentally Sound and Sustainable Approach should be Adopted for Their Disposal.
