Tender Summary
The Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Mil: RIVM in Netherlands from Europe region has released this tender for Rationale and background of the procurement need Dendrochronology is the science of dating wood and determining historical climate data based on the unique variation in thickness of tree rings using calendars. This technique works by means of optical microscopy. Research has shown (Barbour et al., 2001) that oxygen isotopes in wood reveal the same unique signal as the thickness variation, thereby directly recording the prevailing local climate conditions. Furthermore, fewer annual rings are required to compare this signal with a calendar in order to date the wood. Based on this, the RCE, together with Naturalis (M. Dominguez), has submitted an application to the EU to develop calendars and date wood that was previously unsuitable for dating via the traditional method. This isotope analysis (and age determination) of wood, and in the future of other organic materials, offers unique opportunities for application in archaeology, architectural history, and heritage conservation. Rapid and efficient isotope analysis/dating would make it possible to analyze a much larger proportion of previously unsuitable material, thereby developing reference chronologies for different periods and wood species. For the further development and application of this isotope technique, which is currently unavailable in the Netherlands, it is desirable to expand the laboratory in Amersfoort with a so-called LA-IRMS (laser ablation isotope ratio mass spectrometry). This technique has only recently become available (Sahlstedt et al., 2025) and validated. Scope of the assignment The scope of the assignment includes the following: • LA-IRMS • Elemental analyzer • Data processing software • PC (including UPS) • Consumables • Preventive and corrective maintenance during the technical lifespan of the system, which is estimated at 10 years. with tender notice no. 714908-2026 published on 15 Oct 2026. The tender is due to expire on 13 Jan 2027.
