NRC has worked on livelihoods and food security for many years. It has had different names over the years; “distribution”, food security, food security and livelihoods (FSL), then the safety net part of food security and finally the inclusion of livelihoods again in 2016/17 to Livelihoods and Food Security (LFS). Today, Livelihoods and Food Security (LFS) is one of six core competencies (CCs) in NRC.
In terms of people reached, LFS has over the years been the second largest CC in NRC . LFS is operating across a wide spectre of interventions; from first line response (FLR), often in the form of direct distribution of food or cash for food , that is reflected in the “Food Assistance” Theory of Change (ToC); to longer term food and agriculture projects, reflected in the “Food and Agriculture system (FAS)” ToC; and more livelihood related interventions focusing on employment and self-employment, reflected in the “Business, Entrepreneurship and Employment (BEE)” ToC.
NRC LFS has a Global Program Development Strategy. The 2022 – 2025 strategy was disseminated in September 2022. The strategy contains 12 workstreams that reflect the areas LFS wants to develop further in the strategy period, where four of the workstreams are priority streams that should be implemented in all country offices (COs) where NRC has LFS interventions.
