Of the rivers flowing into the Caspian Sea, the Volga occupies the main place, the basin area of which is 1.4 million km2. An active decline in the level of the Caspian Sea has been observed since 1995 from 26.62 m to 28 m below the Baltic Sea level, attributed to reduced inflows from rivers in particular the Volga river, and increased evaporation levels due to increasing temperatures largely caused by climate change. The 1995 high level was a peak that followed a sharp rise started in 1977 when the Caspian Sea level was 29.12 m below the Baltic Sea level, i.e. a 2.5 m rise in 18 years only with tender notice no. 0002001608 published on 12 May 2023.
