The principles and recommended practices should provide direction, amongst others, on the following key internal control components: ? directive – e.g. Setting of clear guidance, “tone at the top” and expectations for good, ethical corporate governance. Preventative – e.g. Establishing policies, procedures, processes and systems that will help to avoid undesirable events/actions from occurring and reducing the impact and likelihood of risks relating to, inter alia fraud, theft, losses, errors etc. Detective – e.g. Processes and procedures to timeously identify where things have gone wrong after an activity or process has taken place such as reconciliations, exception reporting, performance reporting, etc. Corrective – e.g. Improving existing internal controls to prevent reoccurrence of undesirable events/actions.
